Raising Teenagers and Valentine’s Day

February 15, 2019

DCIM103GOPROGOPR4271.JPG

I was having my afternoon coffee when my eldest kid arrived from school, yanked open the kitchen door too hard (because we Filipinos don’t normally use the front door), threw his backpack on the library floor and slammed the door shut to his room.

I was ready to rage like what the f*ck was that when his brother followed inside after him, laughing. I asked what was funny and he said that his brother got turned down by a girl on Valentine’s day.

I’m raising teenagers aged 14 and 15. I’m 34.

I remember back in high school, every Valentine’s day, a number of girls would be called to the Student Affairs office to receive flowers from their boyfriends or admirers. Almost everyone would wait by the hallway to see the enormous bouquets and gush and giggle. (I went to an all-girls school by the way.) My name was never called, I never had the shameless opportunity to claim a dozen roses because as far as I could recall, I did not waste my time tearing over some ridiculous crush when I was this age, I was busy sneaking out to drink and play pool (not something I’m really proud of). Boys were the least of my concerns.

So I found my kid’s situation kind of amusing. I’m not a bad mother.

I knocked on the door to his room before letting myself in, it was pitch black. I turn the lights on and found him crying on his bed. I sat beside him and stroked his back, asked what was wrong. For a while, he was just silent, trying his best not to cry. He finally said to leave him alone. I’m not doing that, no kid is demanding me to do anything I do not want to do, so I remained where I was, told him that he could talk to me, that he could tell me what happened at school, that he could tell me why he was so triggered. I guess he realized I wasn’t going anywhere until he spills, so with a heavy sigh, he said that his heart was broken. I seriously tried not to laugh. I AM NOT A BAD MOTHER. But honestly, I don’t know how to deal with this. Motherhood, especially parenting teenagers, did not come with a manual. I asked how his heart was broken. Apparently, since it’s Valentine’s day, he gave gifts to this crush, but she turned away and he felt humiliated. I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. I mean here is my baby boy, all grown up, having his heart broken by some ugly piece of shit. Sorry.

I did not know what to say. I told him it’s going to be okay even if I know it’s going to hurt really bad at the moment. I told him there are still so many other girls he will eventually meet and fall in love with even if I know his heart longs for a certain someone. Not the best choice of words.

But I also told him, assured him, that even if we don’t agree on most things, Mama will never turn away from him. Mama will always happily accept even paper roses and half eaten Kit Kats. I’ve collected all those V-day cards he and his brothers gave me since they started to learn how to make one. When everyone leaves, Mama will stay, Mama will always be here. Mama will never stop loving you.

A broken heart, heavily laden with dramatic weight and sadness.

Many years ago, I too suffered from a broken heart. Lots of uncontrollable sobbing and tantrums involved. If I had a dollar for every heartbreak and disappointment I’ve ever experienced, I’d just well be able to quit work and travel the world. But I’ve long mustered forgetting and blocking out the pain, the hurt. We cannot just continue to keep reliving our misery. I’ve come to terms with what has been and have totally moved on.

There is no socially established mourning method for broken hearts. It’s just plain sad. But if we try to see it as an experience to learn about ourselves, the process of moving on opens up an opportunity of self-betterment instead.

He wouldn’t be able to understand this for now, it’s a lot to take in for a fragile 15-year old, so I just let him be sad and cry it all out.

Before I left the room, I asked my kid, curious, if his crush even accepted the gifts he gave before she turned away and he said yes (that b*tch). I told him to give it time, that maybe she was just shy (while rolling my eyes). I am not a bad mother. I asked him what he gave her, he told me he gave a single red rose and some chocolates. Hearing chocolates, I asked what kind he gave, he told me he got some of the chocolates I keep in the fridge. We had a good laugh.

Mystic Island | 2018

February 20, 2018

Our annual Vday getaway was cut one day short because of typhoon Basyang but we managed lol.

Day 1 | Valentine’s Day

Stayed in Negros Occidental (for a change).

IMG_0276 (2)

Brought my date with me to eat tooooo much seafood and watch the sunset

IMG_0279

Sunset at Melkens Seafood Restaurant, Brgy. Balaring, Silay City

Haven’t gone to the beach yet but I look so dark already (I’m blaming it on work and softball lol). Valentine’s day spent with best friends and family.

Day 2 | Dumaguete

Road trip!

IMG_0314

Well because my friends love to eat we had breakfast first at McDonald’s (haha) then lunch at Kalan-an sa Dalan in Hinigaran.

Kalan-an sa Dalan, Hinigaran – good place to stop over when driving south

Arrived Dumaguete just in time for sunset. Normally it takes about 5 hours or less when driving from Bacolod City but well, we had so many side (food) trips.

First stop, Rizal Boulevard. Because we wanted to blend in with the tourists (haha).

Tempura, squid balls, squid rolls and balut

We had dinner at Golden Roy’s Lechon Manok and dessert at Sans Rival.

Day 3 | Siquijor

Trike ride to the port lol

You have the option to take the RORO or the fast craft when going to Siquijor Island from Dumsville. We took the RORO, takes about an hour — Montenegro Lines cost P145.00/person (P130 regular fare and P15 terminal fee).

Siquijor is known as the Mystic Island because of its mystic traditions such as black magic and sorcery. But in all honesty, those are like — ancient. Mystic Island because the place is truly magical in all its sense.

From the pristine waters of the port to the emerald green shades of the waterfalls to the beaches with powdery white sand.

Not only that, the people are generally very friendly and accommodating.

We rented a multi-cab to take us to places for the day. Rate was P1,800 and our driver was a former councilor of one of the towns, I forgot which one. Very simple people.

Went around the markets to look for sea urchins but to no avail, all SOLD OUT! 😦

Cambugahay Falls

We only went to 2 of the popular spots on the island because we didn’t really have much time (and we all woke up late haha), we were only there for the day. Going to Cambugahay falls, you actually pass by the Fish Spa, it’s under a 400-year-old Balete tree somewhere in Lazi but we skipped this one as it was really crowded.

135 steps down.

DCIM101GOPROGOPR1816.JPG

Normally, the water is the shade of emerald green but since it had been storming the whole week, water was kind of murky.

DCIM101GOPROGOPR1796.JPG

But that did not stop my friends from jumping in.

P20 unlimited Tarzan swings. P30 parking fee.

Salagdoong Beach

DCIM101GOPROGOPR2042.JPG

Entrance fee is P30/person. Parking fee is P35.

It was really crowded that day and waiting time for lunch is one hour, perfect excuse to swim in the sea and laze on the shore. Amazing that despite being a public beach, it is very well maintained! Water is crystal clear, shore is clean. Food is so so but we were so hungry we devoured everything.

DCIM101GOPROGOPR1828.JPG

DCIM101GOPROGOPR1987.JPG

DCIM101GOPROGOPR2027.JPG

Took us 45 minutes from the beach to the port and the scenery was so picturesque, staying on the island for one day is not enough.

Boarded the 6pm RORO back to Dumaguete. Forgot the shipping line but regular fare was P100. We were pooped.

Napped at the hotel when we arrived and went to Sans Rival (again) for dinner.

We stayed at Sierra Hotel in Dumaguete City. It’s very conveniently located near major commercial hubs and tourist destinations, and is only minutes away from the airport and seaport. It’s fairly new having opened 5 floors in 2016 and the 6th floor in January of this year. Rooms are spacious, comfy and clean. We stayed in a deluxe twin room for P2,900/night.

Day 4 | Home bound

Lunched at the famous Jo’s Chicken Inato (with double rice),

DCIM101GOPROGOPR2044.JPG

and dessert at Panda Ice Cream. Yum!

Ube Fried Ice Cream by Panda —  I missed you!

IMG_0439

Took us 4 hours to arrive in Bacolod City and we went straight to Silay City for friends to catch their 9pm flight back to Manila. But first! Capped off our trip with inasal pandesyosa, isaw and pork barbecue at Golden Food Park.

Always a riot with my forever dates. My whole face hurts from all the nonstop laughter. Thanks loves!

Happy Hearts | 2015

February 20, 2015

So every February, me and my friends agree to go to some random place together, either just here or out of the country. Haven’t joined them since forever but was fortunate enough to tag along this year.

This year they decided on Baguio.

Took the last flight out to Manila.

We then went to see the Philippine Military Academy. Just so we get to see it I guess especially for the first timers (haha).

We had hot chocolate in the afternoon at Choco-Late de Batirol at Camp John Hay. Temperature went as low as 17C. Must try the traditional blend Chocolate de batirol, bibingka and turon de langka.

Day 2

Good morning! It’s Valentine’s day! ❤️

IMG_6226

Started the day lining up at Good Shepherd. Must try their ube jam, strawberry jelly and chocolate crinkles.

Had our lunch at Pizza Volante and went to the market after to buy pashmina shawls and blankets.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

We also went strolling at Burnham park and munched on a lot of street food. It’s Panagbenga festival the whole month of February so the park was full of floral displays.

We also had our picture taken with Doglas, the largest St. Bernard in Baguio (so they claim).

IMG_6215

Went to the spa and had our Valentine’s dinner after at Mario’s. Food is really good. Going to the spa was interesting too (haha).

They also had this treat for the ladies.

And to sum it all up, s’mores by the fireplace.

Day 3

Strawberries sell at Php150.00 per box!

Last stop…

Time to get lucky!

IMG_6276

Day 4

Went shopping and had dinner with my loves at Clawdaddy before flying home to Bacolod the next day.

IMG_6391

I may not be lucky in the romance department but I am very much fortunate with family and friends. I did not receive flowers or chocolates or whatever on Valentine’s day and it’s okay. This is enough, they are enough.

Until the next February adventure!

Additional bonus: Talked with my kids (via Viber) and they showed me their grades. I was one happy Momma. This has been the best Valentine’s treat I’ve had in years. Thank you God!
